Premiership Managers I’d have dinner with…

In this new feature I plan to list a group of six Premiership managers that I wouldn’t mind going out to dinner with – decent blokes who would have stuff to say of footballing and general interest and hopefully enjoy a pint or two before the meal and a little brandy afterwards…Of course this group can change, based on their latest comments/interview, and that’s why I will also have a reserve list of eight managers, one of whom could step in if invited…The final group of six managers will really have to re-think their behaviour if they ever want to be asked along on this football and culinary feast…

Currently on the guest list are…Martin O’Neill – a good bloke to have at any dinner table, Gianfranco Zola – a lovely fella and footballing gentleman, Harry Redknapp – for a ‘bit of this and that’, Roy Keane – passionate about his football and can handle his drink, Arsene Wenger – to select the wine, and Gareth Southgate – very “nice” and ‘cos he’s my mate…

Waiting anxiously for the postman to arrive with a possible invite are…Roy Hodgson (was in the top six until his refusal to admit that A. Johnson should have been sent off this past weekend against West Ham), Steve Bruce (he’d have to accept my many comments during his years as a BlueNose etc), Scolari – must improve his English,  Ferguson – must improve his English, someone from Spurs, Phil Brown – needs to stop smiling so much, David Moyes – needs to smile occasionally, and Newcastle’s latest sucker…

And these six very unlikely to get the nod…Raffa Benitez – would he say anything we could believe?, Paul Ince – boring, Gary Megson – doesn’t seem to understand the game, Mark Hughes – enough of the excuses, Tony Mowbray – Yorkshireman, Tony Pulis – can’t wear a baseball cap at dinner…

Quotes and chants of the Game – Sept.5th, 2008

“Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, so we will see in January if he is serious.”
Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim, front man for Manchester City’s new Middle East owners the Abu Dhabi United Group, stirs things up by suggesting City will make a £135m bid for Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I’ve got more respect for Ferguson than anyone else in the game. He’s like a Scouser, really. He’s funny, doesn’t mind telling people to **** off, and he even votes Labour. I love him.”
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher declares his love for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

“We have sold Robinho for reasons of human nature. The fact is we have accepted an offer from Manchester City and that he is not going for sporting reasons.”
Real Madrid president Roman Calderon suggests Robinho’s record-breaking £32m move to Eastlands was not just about football.

“I was watching a TV programme about accents the other day where they said the Birmingham dialect was the most difficult to understand, so I couldn’t make out what they were saying.”
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez’s retort after being asked if he was surprised by the abuse he received at Villa Park.

“Clubs like ours can’t afford to go bananas in the transfer market. Our wage bill is quite high for a football club of this standing and we can’t get in 10 Johan Elmanders because they’re very expensive to buy and very expensive to run.”
Bolton boss Gary Megson counts the cost of £9m Swedish striker Elmander injuring a hamstring in his second game for the Trotters.
“When I saw Lazio celebrating as if they had won the World Cup, I thought ‘That won’t happen again’.”
Sir Alex Ferguson recalls Manchester United’s Super Cup loss to Lazio in 1999 just before United suffer a 2-1 defeat to Zenit St Petersburg in the same competition.

“We won’t be able to shut him up when he comes back to us. But then again, there’s no change there.”
Fulham first-team coach Ray Lewington predicts there will be no peace and quiet at the training ground when Jimmy Bullard returns from international duty with England.

“Sorry about the noise. It’s caused by a fat man with a bald head doing something that can only loosely be called singing.”
BBC Radio Manchester’s Jack Dearden commentating near a loud fan.

Shaun Wright-Phillips
“It was great to come back and score two goals at the place I call home.”
Winger Shaun Wright-Philips after scoring a brace on his Manchester City return at…the Stadium of Light.

“Liverpool have not played and they have won three games. It’s amazing.”
Lawro’s predictions.
CHANTS OF THE WEEK

“Are you England in disguise?”
Arsenal fans as Steve McClaren’s FC Twente suffer a 4-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium.

“Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim-cheru who needs Sol Campbell when we’ve got Shittu.”
Bolton fans serenade defender Danny Shittu to the tune of Mary Poppins’ Chim Chim Cheree.

“We’ve got more points than you.”
Hull City fans to Wigan supporters who were celebrating a 5-0 win at the KC Stadium.

Another Monday Morning – Sept 1st, 2008

Another busy weekend enabled me to watch jut four matches – non of them exactly classics…

Villa 0   Liverpool 0…

Good to see Barry in  Villa shirt rather than playing against them but either way this one seemed like a 0-0 affair all the way from the start when Liverpool lined-up with a five man midfield that included the 20 m pound Keane (23 goals in 2007-08)  out wide on the left…The draw was a fair result although Red Scouse fans had a rrasonable claim for a penalty turned down but this would have been harsh on the Villa…

Arsenal 3   Newcastle 0…

Only one team in it. A forlorn Michael Owen had no support up front for the Magpies as Arsenal returned to form following the loss at Fulham. Some lovely goals and Keegan now seems to be in a litle trouble – not knowing where he actually stands in the club’s decision-making processes

Sunderland 0   Man City 3…The Mackems will not play this poorly at The Stadium of Good Fortune very often but Man City did look sharp and ran out convincing winners. With Wright-Phillips and now Robinho joining before the transfer deadline we’ll get to see if Mark Hughes is a good manager because if they disappoint it will be down to him…

Middlesbro’ 2   Stoke 1…Poor game which only really emphasized that Southgate has got a decent bunch of hard-working players who will finish in the top ten whilst Stoke will have difficulty staying up…

Oh, and I just wanted to point out that the vastly over-rated Paul Jewel has his Derby County team – “we’ll definitely get promoted” – poised to make their  move from the bottom three of the Championship – prat…

Claret & Light Blue v Lawro of the B.B.C.

A very poor week for both participants this week as I just edged out Lawro with 3 correct results to 2, neither of us getting any correct scores…

For the season, after 29 matches, the scores are…

C & LB           15 CORRECT RESULTS     3 CORRECT SCORES

LAWRO          11 CORRECT RESULTS     1 CORRECT SCORE
